General Info You Might Like to Know

Here are a few event details we wanted to pass along to you before you arrive:

SOME PIG TENT
Find us at space #427 on Rum Runner Rd in Lot A. Look for the tent with the Three Little Pigs' houses made of straw, sticks and brick. The attached map below illustrates our exact location.

TICKETS
Please be aware that additional tickets must be purchased for entrance to the American Royal Complex. You can buy advanced tickets online prior to the event for $13 or you can pay $15 at the gate. Please have your tickets for Some Pig I Used to Know to gain entrance into our tent. These tickets will give you access to all the BBQ and drink available. Remember, VIP gains entrance at 6:00 pm with General Admission entry at 7:00 pm.

WEATHER
Currently, weather reports show a 30% chance of rain with a high of 87°F and a low of 48°F. Potential of severe thunderstorms. It will be a shock from this gorgeous weather we've been enjoying lately, but just remember to dress warmly and think about carrying an umbrella or two! Most of our space is covered by a tent so you will definitely have a place to stay nice and dry as you enjoy the evening.

PARKING
Parking is available on a first come, first serve basis. There is a variety of paid parking available in different lots around the American Royal complex. We encourage attendees to use the remote parking sites with free shuttle service or to use taxi or car services to arrive at the event. Traffic from both cars and pedestrians is very, very congested.

To see a list of remote sites please visit: http://www.americanroyal.com/events_detail.aspx?id=129

ENTERTAINMENT
Live entertainment will be provided by country band Lonesome Jake, with DJ Fat Sal spinning records late into the night and standup comic Scott Shaffer as our emcee. We'll also have caricature artist Deborah Moreno and a fun photo backdrop where you can hang with the Three Little Pigs.

We look forward to seeing you on Friday, October 4th!

Rescheduling Reserve Wine Tasting

To all our friends and sponsors who have been invited to Reserve Wine Tasting at our Some Pig BBQ event at the American Royal this Friday, October 4th:

We have some good news and we have some bad news....

THE BAD NEWS: Due to Missouri liquor laws and the American Royal's very strict enforcement of rules this year, we are going to have to reschedule the reserve wine tasting. If we hold the tasting anyway, the American Royal has notified us that we risk fines, arrest and expulsion from the American Royal Complex.

THE GOOD NEWS: We will definitely be holding the reserve tasting at a later date. This might work out for the best since 5 o'clock is a difficult time for most guests to arrive.

We apologize for the inconvenience! Please understand that we are trying our best to make it up to you and all our generous sponsors. Please contact us if you have any additional questions.

Thank you so much and we look forward to seeing you this Friday!

Beverage Update

Due to increased scrutiny from The American Royal regarding Missouri liquor laws, we have had to alter our beverage line up somewhat and wanted to give all our guests a heads up on what to expect.

The wine will be from Gnarly Head, a sponsor of the American Royal. Jarrod Finn, our beverage chair and experienced bartender, will be pre-batching a couple of specialty vodka and whiskey cocktails for the evening using Svedka Vodka and Jameson Irish Whiskey. Beer options are old standbys Budweiser and Bud Light. Our non-alcoholic beverages are water, Coke and Sprite.

Thanks to Kendall Jackson and their $1,000 cash donation for helping us sidestep what could have been a budget killer!

This blog post is for complete transparency and to show liquor control and the American Royal that we understand and respect liquor laws and American Royal guidelines and will follow their rules to the letter.

But what about liquor donated by our beverage sponsors?

I'm glad you asked! We invite all friends and guests of Safe Place for Kids and the Some Pig BBQ event to come see us on Thursday or Saturday, the day before and/or after the main event.

During those days, we will happily pour wine, beer and liquor all compliments of our generous beverage sponsors: Kendall Jackson, Murphy Goode, Stone Brewing Co., Boulevard Brewing Company and Dark Horse Distillery.

Don't hestitate to come see us once, twice, three times so we can drink and barbecue all weekend long. Thank you for your continued support and understanding – we can't wait to get the party started!

More Decor

We're recruiting EVERYONE who wants to help so simple conversations around the kitchen table turn into: sooooo, do you want to make that for us? One of the pieces that will go into our butcher shop is a diagram of the various cuts from a pig drawn in chalk on a chalkboard. Our newest friend, Sven Segers, just moved to Kansas City and willingly accepted our challenge. He sketched this immediately after our conversation and we are very excited to see the final product.

Meanwhile, Shannon is going over-the-top with her creations. She made this wolf head and mounted this ahem, bad ass piece to hang in the butcher shop as well. BB Wolf Brothers Butcher Shop! Opening Soon!

Remember these cute little boys? Well, they turned into even more adorable little piglets. So cute, right? See this piggie portrait and many more in our gallery of Some Pigs We Used to Know at Tent #427.

Rebecca found this watercolor pig at a garage sale inside a tablet of watercolor paper. It was fate.

The stick house is definitely a shanty, but one we can't wait to be in. Halfway there, just needs a bundle or so of sticks and lots of liquid nails!

Shannon and Rebecca added a roof, the door and windows to complete the Straw House. We continue to be constantly amazed by this insanely talented and more importantly, hard working team. Good job girls. Keep going!!!

BBQ Team

The big party Friday night is all good and fun, but the big deal about the American Royal is all about the BBQ and competition. Tony Golec, our BBQ chair, and his team will be competing for Safe Place at this year's event. Tony and his group meet once a month to visit barbecue joints all over Kansas City in addition to grilling and smoking their own meats. This is their first competition so we want to wish them lots of luck!

Badges for our VIPs

If you're attending as one of our Very Important Pigs, you get one of these miniature badges. Pin it to your shirt so everyone knows who's boss hog in this joint. Designed by event co-chair Linh Trieu.

Straw House

The straw house in The Three Little Pigs is nearly complete. We just need to add some windows and fluff up the roof, but it's looking pretty fantastic already. One house down, two to go. Thanks to our hardworking space planning and set decorating team: Shannon & Rebecca!
